Stylin' Mama
One thing my mama never told me…your children would work hand in hand with God on teaching you about the virtue of humility!
I remember when the girls were little, and I wanted them to talk to me, especially during the times they were sick. However, once they were talking, I was wishing they couldn’t talk. Everything that I said, I mean everything, they would repeat. Yikes!!! There were times I had the color of blue in my face from holding my breath wondering what would come out of those precious little lips of theirs!
My husband and I were at their mercy. It was at that moment when the virtue of humility became an ongoing lesson with me! I had this feeling that God would use our children to teach us. Let’s just say, it didn’t take long for us to realize we didn’t want our girls to echo us, if you catch my drift. Our children are the best self-improvement course that I have ever taken. This self-improvement course is still going on even today!
One of the most embarrassing moments had been when one of our daughters had taken my cellphone and had entered a screen name “Styling Mama”. She had an advantage over me in that I didn’t know how the screen name had got on it and certainly did not know how to take it off.
The gesture that she thought of her mama as styling was sweet, however I did not want the rest of the world to know I was “styling”! I planned never to lose my cellphone, until I figured out how to get those words off of my screen. Then it happened one night at a ballgame, our oldest daughter had forgotten to bring her cellphone, and asked for mine. She was working concessions that night and wanted to find us at the ballgame when her shift was over. I gave her my phone with strict instructions to keep it in her pocket and not to lose it. I told my husband after we went in to watch the ballgame, “I need to get the phone figured out and get that title off of the main screen.”
My husband and I were sitting in the bleachers by the Governor, his wife and parents when two high school girls came to the microphone to make an announcement at half-time. I saw them all giggly and holding a cellphone. I became panicked. One of the girls said, “we had a person turn in this cellphone, (giggle, giggle) and the screen name says “styling mama”. “If you are styling mama would you please come to the stand to claim your phone.” My husband turned to me laughing and said, “you better go claim your phone”. The governor and his family looked at me and chuckled. I could tell the two young ladies were not going to leave until someone came to them to claim their phone. Therefore, I took a deep breath, held my composure confidently and went forward to retrieve my phone.
Needless to say the screen name no longer said “styling mama” on it by the end of the night. I am truly thankful for all the lessons I have learned from our children, especially the lessons on humility. Whenever the time arises in me when I think I am good based on my own merits, it seems that God finds a way to remind me that only through Him am I good!
Proverbs 15:33 (NASB)
