Numbers
Numbers are either friend or foe depending on the use of them!
Whether a person is paying bills or buying something your want; A performance of some sort such as a musical, ball game or what have you. A person gets their self worth when there a great number of people who had come or defeat if there were only a few in attendance.
I am in ministry and I am a number counter, not because I like to, it is part of my job description, In fairness I can understand the purpose especially for those who make an investment to our ministry. When someone makes an investment one hopes that their hard earned money would cause reward and growth in the end. In ministry in order to have the support there must be data compiled showing the numbers of people who want what is being offered. There are times that I also look at numbers and either feel puffed up when they are high or defeated when they are low.
Numbers seem quite logical except when one looks to the cross. There was nothing logical about what Jesus had done for us. Even if there was only one of us, He would have died for just one! In some sense numbers are important to Him as well. Christ is interested in all of us being with Him for eternity.
It can be a dangerous slope if one’s ministry gets stuck on numbers, whether your outreach only affects few people, or whether it affects many. One must not fall prey to success or unsuccessful for the trap that it is a reflection of you and what you are doing wrong or right. One must stay focused on proclaiming the good news of Christ whether it is to only one or many. Our focus must be to look to the cross for an example for in the end Christ would have died for a number total of just one!
Hebrews 12:1-3 Jesus The Example "Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. "For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary [c]and lose heart.
