Chapter Two “We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10, NIV) In a commentary it defines what it means to be God’s handiwork, “God saves us not merely to save us from the wrath we rightly deserve, but also to make something beautiful of us. We are His workmanship, which translates the ancient Greek word poiema. The idea is that we are His beautiful poem. The Jerusalem Bible translates workmanship as “work of art.” That beautiful thing God is making of us is active in good works. (1) We are created in Christ Jesus to do good works. “These are just as much a part of God’s predestined plan as anything else is. These good works are valid evidence that someone is walking as one of God’s chosen.” (2) Often times we do not feel like a work of art due to the world’s standards. It is our natural tendency is to seek identity in external factors, such as our careers, relationships, appearance, grades, and reputation. These may seem solid foundations but are not permanent and can change without warning. If we base our identity on these factors, we risk disappointment and potential negative consequences. On the other hand, finding our identity in God is crucial. He is unchanging, reliable, and trustworthy. It is essential to understand who God is, what He says about Himself, and what He says about us. Our identity can be defined by who God is making us in His image. In Christ, you are chosen by God, who sent His perfect Son to die for you to be included in His family. You are forgiven for being free of sin and perfect in doing right. Christ's sacrifice bought you back from sin and evil, making you a new creation. As a child of God, you are adopted into His family, considered a legitimate child with the rights and standing of Jesus His Son. Remember as you continue reading you are a work of art!
